Keep Your Cool...You'll Be Happier!
Now, we all know someone who can really get under your skin. That person who does everything they can to find every button you have so they can push them multiple times (please don't tell me I'm the only one). Unfortunately, you cannot control them. However, you have absolute control over your reactions to the person. When that person comes at you yelling and causing trouble, what happens when you yell back in return? It more than likely makes the situation worse. However, if you change the rules and don't react the way they think you will, it is going to make them stop dead in thier tracks and thus, conflict over. Think about it. If you do not react the way they are expecting, they will be fighting a one-participant argument. The tough part is keeping enough self control so that you do not become involved in the situation. Talking in a soft voice gets the message across that you are not playing the game and the other person is left trying to figure out why they didn't win at thier game. This scenario may have to occur several times before the other party gets the point, but they will eventually get it. Have you ever heard the saying (or bible verse): "A soft voice turns away wrath"? So, the next time this situation presents itself to you, remember the soft voice and leave your assailant trying to figure out what happened as they retreat scratching thier head. You can then smile to yourself that you did not get involved and Wala! No bad feelings for you! |
