Organizing Your Library
Everyone has thier own way of doing things, including organizing thier personal libraries. There are many factors involved, such as amount of books, types of bindings, topics of materials and space to work with. This article will basically relate to my tastes, but feel free to take ideas to merge with your own. First of all, I have alot of non-fiction. In fact, non-fiction comprises probably 75% of my private library. I only collect titles which interest me, however. One hard-fast rule for me is to get it in hardcover if the author offers one. I will only have a softcover if that is the only way the book was offered to the public. I find books at garage sales, library sales, titletrader.com and thrift stores. I arrange all my books by topic based upon the Library of Congress classification. Each topic is ordered by author. I usually remove dustjackets and store them in plastic totes as your bookshelf will look more vintage and artsy, especially if you tend to tuck little trinkets on the space between the edge of the bookshelf and the edge of your book's spine. All of my fiction books are in a whole different area of the room on thier own shelf by author. The children's books are also in a different area of the room. I do not order these books anymore since I have attained grandchildren as the young ones had me trying to re-order them every time they leave from a visit. I gave up on that! If you want to have an electronic catalog of your bookshelf, you will be able to do this for free at librarything.com. What is even cooler is that you can also see who else has the same books on thier shelves that you have! So there you go, now go organize your bookshelves! |
