Rev Up That Computer - Painlessly!

Computers are like cars: the average person can be intimidated by maintenance because they don’t understand them. Unlike cars, that can be very complex with the average person unable to work on them by themselves. Computers simply are not in the same category.

People pay a lot of money for services when they can keep that money in their pockets and still get the job done. Lucky for me, my husband has taught me how I can increase the speed of my computer and keep the service fees in my own pocket instead of someone else's. I really wanted to share this easy fix with you, too.

One of the simplest upgrades to any computer is to add additional RAM (Random Access Memory) to improve performance. This is a memory that assists your computer in moving the data that comes through it, whether through programs you use or information from the internet. The Hard Drive on your computer is where permanent data is stored, while the RAM simply takes data in - real time - and moves it around. Computers use what’s called Binary Language, which is simply two characters, zeros and ones. These are known as bits. Eight of these bits are called a byte. The more of these you have in your memory, the more data you can process, hence the better the performance will be.

Anyone can do this upgrade by yourself, and here’s how (this is so simple even I can do it!):

First, look at your owner’s manual under memory to find out what your computer has. It will be called SDRAM, DDR, or DDR2. These are simply terms that tell you what kind of device you need. Older computers will have SDRAM. Newer computers will have one of the other types. Once you know what type it has, simply look for what the maximum memory you can have is. It will be listed like “ Expandable to 2gigabyte”. Once you have this information, you can go to any store such as Best Buy, Circuit City, etc., and buy the module you need.

Now that you have the module, here’s what you do:

Disconnect the components from your computer (the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.) simply by unplugging them from the back. Computers are color coded so don’t panic about not knowing where things go when it comes time to hooking them back up. Any computer case will have a couple thumb screws that allow you to slide the cover off. Once you have that done, you will see a bunch of circuit boards. In plain sight will be a board that has a memory module on it. You’ll recognize because it is the same thing you are holding in your hand (well, I'm sure you put it down to open the computer, but they look very similar to the one you just bought) There’s no other board that will look like it. That module is sitting in a socket and next to it will be anywhere from one to three empty sockets. All you need to do is take the module you just bought, hold each end, and push it into one of those empty sockets. Don’t worry, the boards can only be put in one way as they are “keyed”, which means you can’t put them in backwards! As you push them down into the socket, there are two “ears” that will snap up onto the module locking it in place.

Voila, you’re done!

Close up your computer, plug everything back in and turn it on. The Microprocessor (computer brain) will recognize the new module and say "Oh cool, I now have more memory"! Nothing to do, nothing to add, simply go on your merry way. You will notice an improvement in how fast your computer will process data and you have saved yourself some money along the way. Remember the old phrase, “perception is reality”. If you think something is too complicated, than it will always seem that way. The reality is that things are not always as they seem, and this is one of the easiest things you can do to give that PC of yours a boost!
