The Importance to Leach
If you do own houseplants, watering may not be enough. Once a month it may benefit your plant to leach the soil. Over time, excess minerals and salts can build up in the soil due to these compounds that exist in our tap water. In high levels, these elements may hinder the health of your plants. Leaching is a very simple process that really doesn't take alot of time, unless, of course, you have lots and lots of houseplants. Leaching is really only necessary to do no more than once per month depending upon the quality of your tap water. The process of leaching is best done when the soil is a little moist. If the soil is completely dried out, the process may take longer as you wait for the soil to become saturated. You simply take the plant and run water over the soil for a period of 5 to 10 minutes. Essentially what happens is that the water running through the soil will flush out all the excess minerals and salts. To see evidence of these elements while leaching, stop up the sink you are leaching in or catch leached water in a bucket. The water will have a yellow tinge to it. If the plant hasn't been leached for a long time or has never been leached, the water will be a darker yellow, almost like a weak tea. It may take time before you notice the water getting less yellow with every leaching. So, to benefit your houseplants, you may want to work in a monthly leaching and watch your houseplants benefit! |
